The Toolbox Droid shows up in The Force Awakens

Tidbits

The Toolbox Droid was built for The Force Awakens by Lee Towersey. It was tough to find on-screen. It was Lee's first build for Creature FX.

Lee built it with wooden blocks for the treads. While that looks cool, apparently it was pretty loud on set. Rumor is that whenever the toolbox droid was on set, JJ Abrams would say something like "That thing isn't going to move, is it? It's just going to sit there, right?" Due to time constraints and design challenges, the treads are locked together, so the droid can't turn.

Ironically the only place I've been able to notice it is on the flight apron at the end of the film - and there it is moving. Apparently it was filmed on interior shots as well, but those apparently were cut.

Files

Lars' 3D Model - 1:1 scale 3D model of the toolbox droid based on Lee's presentation photos.

Toy-scale (5.5%) version of the 3D files. This is a toy, not appropriate for detailed droids.

Specifications

One of the props in the photo is a 2L Pressol Can, so we're basing the height off of that. You can even see the 2L mark on the jug, so it's almost like having a ruler!

"Tools"

  • Unidentified Oiler Oil Can
  • 2L Pressol Measuring Jug with Lid and spout Pressol part # 07 622

Toolbox Droid is the subforum for toolbox droids. Lee commented a little, but of course there's a limit to what he can provide.

In this gif it does indeed move, and apparently has the oil can and other tools on top.
