Opening Options

Savage's original plans called for removing the top between the 3D printed section and the laser cut section of the top. Between the white ring in this photo and the colorful top segments.

Another fairly straightforward place to join the top and bottom would be between the lower base and the "grill", so the grill would be attached to the top.

A third option is between the Jtop and K rings, so the "window" strip is on the top and the "grill" is on the bottom.

Pros & Cons

SavageCreature's original plans call for the top cap to be removable between the 3D printed segments and the "Ring M" top of the base. Kresty managed to glue those together, making it somewhat impossible to follow that plan.

Between Ring M and the 3D segments

  • SavageCreature's original design.
  • Reasonably nice separation of the bottom and the top, leaving room for a "bucket" in the base, such as to contain a charger for a robot.
  • A single point of removal (you don't have to disconnect a bunch of other stuff to make this work).
  • There will be a visible seem along the edge of the "top" where the ring and 3D segments fit. (The other techniques would allow you to putty this gap)
  • Needs something to keep it from being jarred loose.

Between the Grill and the Base

(Kresty would probably do this in the future)

  • Ring M makes a great template for gluing the top segments together
  • Allows the gap to be filled between the segments.
  • Upper and lower hoses are confined to the Grill/Top and the Bottom, so you donʻt have to worry about unplugging hoses.
  • Allows good access to the inside of the base.
  • The top section is larger and somewhat top-heavy, so it might be easily knocked ajar, depending on how you keep and store it.
  • No key in current design to keep the grill/hoses aligned with the lower base fittings. (but easy to see).
  • Posts on B supports and groove in H1 ring help keep it in place.
  • Can't putty in the seam between the H1 ring and the grill.

Between the J(top) and K Rings

(This is what Kresty did because he screwed up Savage's idea and didn't think of the other idea).

  • This is a terrible idea of last resort.
  • The tabs on the rings allow them to be keyed to the right position.
  • Can't separate it without removing the upper hoses.
  • Tougher to fit the upper hoses. (If they try to "push" the top up, then they would fit well if the sections were glued, but are a pain to get to not push or pull too much.)
  • There isn't a lot to hold them together, Kresty added hooks to the inside edges, with elastic bands to keep the top and bottom connected.
